Course Info
1. Introduction to Music Pedagogy
- Learn about pedagogy and its elements - how the classroom setting influences pedagogy and the various pedagogical approaches that you can employ in your classrooms.
- Familiarise with effective music pedagogical methods for adults and children, which can be used in conducting ensembles and choirs, as well as group and individual instrumental and vocal lessons.
- You will participate in a portfolio of continuous assessments that include discussions, quizzes and written assignments.
2. Learning and Cognition 1
- Familiarise with the fundamental concepts related to how human beings learn as well as an introduction to cognitive science and study of the human brain.
- Learn the fundamental concepts in behavioral sciences and early cognition in children that have a lasting impact on the learning abilities of human beings.
- Apply these concepts to music teaching methods, which involve the development of motoric, cognitive, and affective skills in young musicians.
- You will be expected to form your own opinions and reflect upon your personal learning journey.
3. Philosophy of Music Education
- Learn about the most relevant philosophers and how their ideas influenced the world of education.
- Understand different views of the purpose and means of education, the classroom setting, the role of the teacher, and the relationship with pupils.
- Learn about the principal philosophical movements like Essentialism, Behaviorism, Constructivism, and Humanism.
- Throughout this module, you will be invited to form and express your opinions on the topics discussed.
4. Music Teaching Practice I
- You will be assigned to an active class under the supervision of its teacher. You will assist the teacher to perform basic administrative tasks for the class, and familiarize with the various day-to-day tasks involved in planning and delivering lessons, including online classes.
- You will be providing tutoring to students for subjects such as music theory, ear training, and performance.
5. 21st Century Pedagogical Models
- Learn about the pedagogic models,teaching strategies and educational devices that will enable you to keep your students engaged and to achieve the course’s learning outcomes to prepare them for 21st-century learning.
- You will be invited to form and express your opinions on the topics discussed, and you will be expected to formulate your own examples of the application of the models learned in the field of music.
6. Learning and Cognition II
- Go in-depth into the study of how human beings learn to perform and compose music.
- Learn about the cognitive processes behind creative thinking, audiation, music improvisation and composition and how to promote them among your students, by learning to work with Gordon and Kodaly’s music teaching methods.
- You will also learn the basics of metacognition and study the motivations behind human efforts to learn, strive and progress.
7. Curriculum and Assessments
- Learn the fundamentals of curriculum design and authoring.
- Recognise the important elements that make a coherent curriculum and learn to construct learning outcomes, learning objectives and lesson plans that have a long-lasting impact on the learning and careers of young musicians.
- Develop the ability to assess the validity of learning outcomes, familiarise with the various types of assessment methods and strategies.
8. Music Teaching Practice II
- Familiarise with the roles and responsibilities of a teaching assistant.
- Learn to use the latest organizational tools effectively to manage a group classroom.
- Learn the desirable attributes of a music educator and how to observe best practices in classrooms.
- At the end of this module, you will be expected to apply theoretical knowledge gained in assisting a teacher.
