In this course, you will learn to play the piano with correct and ergonomic posture while developing a range of different techniques. You will be introduced to the major and minor scales, major, minor, and diminished triads. You will also develop right-left hand coordination and familiarize with popular chord progressions by learning and performing a repertoire of both classical and contemporary music. Additionally, you will be introduced to simple pentatonic/modal improvisation.
This course allows you to earn credits towards the Pro Music Performance - Keyboard programme at True School. If you choose the credit option and pass this course with a minimum overall grade of 50%, this course will be recognised and counted as completed in your study pathway when you enrol for a full fledged, on campus Pro programme at True School.

In this session, you will be introduced to the correct posture and finger technique that you need to develop in order to play the piano well. You will learn the names of the notes on the piano and understand the concept of tones and semi-tones. Additionally, you will learn how to construct and play select major scales, major triads, and minor triads, using the tone and semi-tone pattern.
Session 2: Inversions And Transposition
In this session, you will be introduced to the concept of inversions. You will learn how to play chords in different inversions and will also learn how to transpose a chord progression to a different key.
Session 3: Introduction To Modes
In this session, you will be introduced to the modes of the major scale. You will work on understanding the tonality of modes and playing them in different keys.
Session 4: Improvisation
In this session, you will be introduced to improvisation. You will work on using periodic rhythm patterns to improvise over simple, diatonic chord progressions.
Session 5: Chord Progressions And Repertoire
In this lesson, you will familiarise with different diatonic chord progressions and will be introduced to a classical piece as well.
Session 6: Pentatonic Scales
In this session, you will learn to identify and play the pentatonic major and minor scales across three tonalities. You will also familiarise yourself with their sounds and improvise short melodies around them.
Session 7: Repertoire
In this session, you will learn to play a contemporary piece, consisting of comping patterns across a diatonic key.
Session 8: Coordination Exercises And Improvisation
In this session, you will learn hand coordination exercises and routines, as well as develop improvisation skills using diatonic and modal harmony.
Session 9: Comping And Improvisation
In this session, you will learn to play an improvised melodic pattern across a chord progression and accompany it with a suitable comping pattern.
Session 10: Revision
In this last lesson, you will revise all the concepts and skills acquired in this term and clear any persisting doubts with regards to the same. You will showcase a thorough understanding of every topic and be made aware of the final exam format in full detail. At the end of this session, you will demonstrate complete readiness for the final exam.
Session 11: Final Exam/Assessment Brief
This session will be your final exam for this term.
Identify all the notes on the piano including sharps and flats
Play select major scales and relative minor scales with correct posture
Play major, minor and diminished triads in select keys
Perform simple pentatonic & modal improvisation
Read simple melodies on staff notation
Perform classical and contemporary repertoire
